The landmark procedure was performed on a 55-year-old woman suffering from hypertension, diabetes, and obstructive sleep apnea, a disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep because of upper airway obstruction. Despite strict adherence to her prescribed treatment, her blood pressure remained dangerously uncontrolled, resulting in repeated hospital admissions.
After a comprehensive medical evaluation, the patient was identified as a suitable candidate for renal denervation therapy. The procedure involves the insertion of a catheter into the renal arteries, which supply blood to the kidneys. Through this catheter, radiofrequency energy is delivered to selectively disrupt the overactive nerves lining the arteries. These nerves play a critical role in sending signals that contribute to persistently high blood pressure. By interrupting these signals, the therapy enables sustained and improved blood pressure control over time.
