Kauvery Heart City Performs Delta Region’s First Renal Denervation Therapy for Resistant Hypertension
Kauvery Heart City in Tiruchirappalli has successfully performed the Delta region’s first renal denervation therapy to treat resistant hypertension. The advanced minimally invasive procedure was carried out on a 55-year-old woman with hypertension, diabetes, and obstructive sleep apnea, marking a major milestone in cardiovascular care in Tamil Nadu.
The landmark procedure was performed on a 55-year-old woman suffering from hypertension, diabetes, and obstructive sleep apnea, a disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep because of upper airway obstruction. Despite strict adherence to her prescribed treatment, her blood pressure remained dangerously uncontrolled, resulting in repeated hospital admissions.
After a comprehensive medical evaluation, the patient was identified as a suitable candidate for renal denervation therapy. The procedure involves the insertion of a catheter into the renal arteries, which supply blood to the kidneys. Through this catheter, radiofrequency energy is delivered to selectively disrupt the overactive nerves lining the arteries. These nerves play a critical role in sending signals that contribute to persistently high blood pressure. By interrupting these signals, the therapy enables sustained and improved blood pressure control over time.
The intervention was carried out successfully by Dr. T. Joseph, a leading Interventional Cardiologist and Electrophysiologist, along with his specialist team at Kauvery Heart City, Trichy. Following the procedure, the patient has shown significant improvement, and her blood pressure is now under much better control.
Commenting on the achievement, Dr. Joseph said that the introduction of renal denervation therapy to the Delta region represents a major advancement in the treatment of difficult-to-control hypertension. He noted that the procedure marks an important step in expanding access to cutting-edge cardiovascular care for patients across the region.
Dr. Joseph explained that resistant hypertension may develop due to several underlying factors, including overactivity of the sympathetic nervous system, hormonal imbalances, kidney-related mechanisms, and associated conditions such as diabetes and obstructive sleep apnea. In such cases, standard medications alone may be insufficient to adequately control blood pressure. If left untreated, resistant hypertension can lead to severe and life-threatening complications, including stroke, heart attack, heart failure, kidney damage, and vision loss. He emphasized that timely intervention in this case was essential to prevent further deterioration and repeated medical emergencies.
Dr. T. Senthil Kumar, a senior cardiothoracic surgeon and Executive Director of Kauvery Heart City, stated that the novel therapy has already benefited nearly 100 patients across the country. He said the institution is proud to introduce the treatment in Trichy for the first time and reaffirmed that Kauvery Heart City remains committed to bringing advanced medical technologies to the region and delivering world-class healthcare.
The successful completion of the Delta region’s first renal denervation therapy marks a transformative moment in hypertension management in Tamil Nadu. By making this advanced treatment available locally, Kauvery Heart City has strengthened access to innovative cardiovascular care and offered new hope to patients suffering from life-threatening resistant hypertension.
